Director of Annual Giving
Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, the Director of Annual Giving develops, executes and manages the university’s comprehensive annual giving program, including the student call center, direct-mail solicitations, Giving Day and unit-specific giving initiatives.
Job Summary
- Plans and manages a comprehensive annual giving program to meet or exceed stated goals.
- Develops and executes a multi-channel strategy appeal schedule to communicate with potential and current donors.
- Coordinates, manages and assesses all direct-response fundraising efforts for annual giving, special projects and campaigns, including Giving Day and a new parent and family giving program.
- Works in collaboration with campus constituents to execute integrated multi-channel strategies using targeted messaging, audience segmentation and crowd-funding techniques.
- Collaborates with the university’s alumni association to nurture student philanthropy.
- Partners with colleagues in Donor Relations to execute stewardship strategies for targeted, annual fund constituencies, including young alumni and first-time, consecutive and leadership-level donors.
- Coordinates donor acquisition and renewal strategies for intercollegiate athletics and provides support to athletics staff for fundraising events and sport-specific giving initiatives.
- Partners with University Communications and Marketing to produce written and digital communications and solicitations.
- Uses Winthrop Magazine and other global communication strategies to inform and educate prospective donors.
- Provides oversight of the call center and related operations and recruits, trains and manages student workers.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Two years of professional experience in fundraising, business development, marketing or inside sales.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with annual giving and/or phonathon programs in a fundraising/development office.
- Supervisory and volunteer management experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Summary
- Knowledge of best practices in annual giving, educational fundraising, direct marketing and volunteer management.
- First-hand or transferable knowledge of annual giving and/or call center programs/operations.
- Self-initiative.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, time management and customer service skills.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
- Computer literacy and ability to learn Raiser’s Edge donor database and related software.
- Ability to handle/manage sensitive and confidential information appropriately and with discretion.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and internal and external constituents.
Travel/Overtime Requirements
Requires evening hours during student call center periods and periodic weekend hours for University Advancement events.
