The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) is seeking a driven and innovative leader to serve as the Director of Annual Giving. The incoming Director will have an opportunity to join a team of fundraising professionals within the Office of Development.

The Director will work under the leadership of the Senior Director of Annual Giving and University Alumni Engagement to formulate and implement effective goals, strategies, and activities to raise annual gifts including a focus on key affinity groups such as grateful patients and families, faculty/staff and alumni. As a collaborative and action-minded leader, the Director will engage with department leaders to create targeted strategies and interpret the analytics of annual giving data. The Director will build and grow a strong base of donors and dollars with special emphasis on implementing and sustaining a unified Annual Giving program whereby the major gift donor pipeline is built through donor acquisition, retention and upgrades. The incoming Director will have an opportunity to continue the growth and expansion of the department by building and retaining a dedicated workforce.

Position Key Accountabilities: 

  • Develops and manages a comprehensive annual giving multi-channel fundraising program focused on donor acquisition, renewal and retention. Manages the activities of direct mail, e-solicitation programs, and special fundraising initiatives.
  • Oversees the formulation and implementation of multichannel grateful patient acquisition and employee/faculty giving programs to grow the pipeline of support.
  • Determines annual giving target markets through utilization of analytics and provides related analysis, reports, and other pertinent information as needed.
  • Develops effective partnerships across the University and provides internal and external partners with appropriate data and content, and ensures adherence to quality standards and timelines. Works collaboratively to advance and achieve program strategic plans and goals.
  • Manages one or more team members including the Human Resources activities for direct reports in regards to: recruiting and selection; hiring and termination, training, development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

Certification/Skills:

  • Strong written communication skills and organizational and leadership abilities.
  • Must be able to work independently and with teams, balance competing priorities and assignments, and collaborate effectively with colleagues, exhibiting diplomacy and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with best practices in direct response.
  • Customer service experience.
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge software preferred.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Minimum Experience:

  • Five (5) years of related professional experience in fundraising or equivalent transferable marketing background, preferably in annual giving in higher education, health care, or nonprofit organizations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
