Position Summary:

UCI Law, founded just ten years ago, is the newest public law school in California in nearly 50 years. The collaborative and interdisciplinary community at UCI Law includes extraordinary students, world-renowned faculty, engaged alumni, and enthusiastic supporters. UCI Law continues to rank highly, including: U.S. News & World Report ranks UCI Law No. 27 in the nation overall out of 198 law schools, and ranks UCI Law’s robust clinical program No. 8 in the nation. UCI Law seeks to train lawyers for the practice of law at the highest levels of the profession and has created a community of law students from a broad spectrum of society. Under the general direction of the Dean of the Law School and working closely with the other senior administrators, the Executive Director of Development (EDOD) is a senior-level development professional who works collaboratively with the Law School Dean and University Advancement (UA) to lead the development program of the School and secure significant philanthropic investments to support it. The primary activity of the EDOD is externally focused to secure private philanthropic support, and the EDOD’s effectiveness will be evaluated on the ability to achieve financial goals and meet metrics. The EDOD reports directly to the Dean, with a dotted line to University Advancement. The EDOD serves as a member of the Dean’s leadership team and a highly collaborative colleague within the Law School and with other development officers across the campus.

Required:

Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience-based knowledge of principles and practices of fundraising for a comprehensive research university, including the ability to direct a complex development program
  • Strong collegial interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively in person, in writing, and by phone
  • Experienced in operating under a prospect moves-management system that utilizes a central database
  • Self-starter able to secure personal appointments and qualify a significant volume of new prospects
  • Collaborative in nature knowing that many donors’ interests involve multiple parts of the university
  • Documented success personally implementing sophisticated, multi-year cultivation strategies that leverage a relationship-building and moves-management approach leading to successful gift closure
  • Demonstrated achievement in securing philanthropic investments
  • Ability to work independently with both School and institutional goals in mind
  • Problem solver who can take initiative and set priorities while being flexible
  • Team-oriented strategist able to effectively manage complex situations involving multiple and sometimes competing constituencies
  • Strong people management skills to effectively recruit, engage, manage and develop a professional development team.
  • Ability to represent the institution professionally, externally and internally
  • Ability to prepare complex and detailed proposals and related materials
  • Attention to detail and thoroughness in completing assigned duties
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Ellucian (Advance) or comparable a donor/prospect database system
  • Adept at navigating complex environments with evolving priorities and communication plans
  • Demonstrable experience in stewardship plans leading to additional investments

Education/Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and seven to ten years successful professional development and/or fundraising related experience, preferably in higher education: OR, any equivalent combinations of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been achieved.
