Nature of Work:
Reporting to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement the Assistant Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations will be a polished professional who knows and understands the nature and purpose of public higher education development and alumni relations. The Assistant Vice President will oversee all central fundraising programs, including alumni relations, annual giving, prospect research, donor relations and stewardship, gift planning, corporate and foundation relations, major gifts, school-and-college-based development program.

Training and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a related area; five to ten years of progressively responsible experience directly related to fundraising and alumni relations.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills are required. Additional qualifications include a record of success in managing or participating in fund-raising programs and soliciting funds from individuals, corporations, and foundations and a working knowledge of advancement technology systems.
  • The successful candidate must possess the ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced and complex environment and work evenings and weekend and travel as required.

Illustrative Examples of Work:

  • The Assistant Vice President will help create a more holistic, strategic and thoughtful approach to the development and alumni relations function of the university. As a key member of the Division of Institutional Advancement and Operations, the Assistant Vice President will play an important role in helping Albany State University prepare and launch a transformative and comprehensive fundraising campaign.
  • The following positions are direct reports to the Assistant Vice President: Director of Development, Director of Annual Giving, Prospect Research Coordinator, Alumni Relations Coordinator, Director of Development for Athletics, Prospect Research Coordinator, Donor Relations and Stewardship Coordinator, Community and Alumni Engagement Coordinator.
  • Reporting to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the Assistant Vice President manages, leads and directs the day to day operations of the overall fundraising, alumni, and donor engagement strategy in support of advancing the university’s mission and strategic plan. This includes annual, major and planned gift cultivation and solicitation, corporate and foundation support, comprehensive campaigns.
  • Work with Vice President for Institutional Advancement to define and articulate the image and priorities of the university.
  • Manages and cultivates a personal portfolio of major gift prospects and provides guidance to the President and Vice President for managing their personal portfolio of major gift prospects.
  • Supervises personnel and identifies strategies to continuously improve individual and departmental performance and outcomes
  • Collaborate effectively with Albany State University Foundation on fundraising initiatives.
  • Establish strong relationships with corporate leaders, government officials, donors, alumni and the advancement community in the interest of gaining knowledge and resources to support university mission.
  • Shall complete all other tasks as assigned by the Vice President for Institutional Advancement and the President of the University.
