The University of Iowa Center for Advancement (UICA) seeks an assistant vice president of development to provide strategic oversight for the Internal Medicine and Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center fundraising teams, and maintain a major gift donor portfolio focused within Internal Medicine. This position works closely with key university and hospital faculty and staff to develop strategic annual and multi-year fundraising plans. In cooperation with the supervisor, the vice president of health sciences development, this position plans, initiates and implements strategic initiatives, primarily for increasing major gift development activity for the assigned areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serves as a trusted philanthropic advisor, educating donors about giving opportunities that would enable them to achieve their desired impact on the UI, UI Health Care, and beyond. Facilitates the movement of major gift prospects through the donor continuum including the identification, qualification, cultivation, negotiation, and stewardship of such prospects. Meets expectations for solicitations, gifts closed, and average gift size (goals established annually with the supervisor in alignment with organization-wide metrics).
  • Clearly articulates the vision and priorities of the unit in a compelling and broadly understandable way. Manages fundraising program, including any special campaigns, in cooperation with UI Health Care leaders. Prepares partners/leaders as necessary for donor meetings and guides their critical role in the giving conversation and donor engagement process.
  • Maintains awareness and understanding through continuing education and interaction with colleagues at other institutions of trends, developments, and new fundraising techniques, especially as related to medicine fundraising.
  • Plans and oversees the overall operational, reporting, budgetary, and financial responsibilities of assigned UICA units. Develops and maintains work systems, procedures, and productivity standards that advance the mission and goals of the UICA units and enable optimum performance of the people and other resources within it. Makes business decisions that are consistent with UICA mission/vision and our organizational culture and values.
  • Empowers employees to take responsibility for their jobs and prioritizes trust and transparent communication as the basis for a productive relationship. Supports employees in developing meaningful goals aligned with those of the UICA unit and UICA and in achieving/surpassing those goals. Inspires performance through clear expectations and ongoing feedback.

Motivates, develops, coaches, and rewards employees for growth in competencies over time, leading to new opportunities for subject matter expertise or leadership. Partners with Talent Management to achieve optimum results for employees, self, UICA unit, and UICA. Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s or better in Any Major.

Experience: Ten or more years of development experience (medical preferred) with a successful record in high-level programmatic and strategy development, major gift fundraising, and leading others.
