Associate Vice President of Institutional Advancement
Position Summary
The Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement (AVPIA) will provide oversight and coordination of the fundraising initiatives for the institution. In addition, the AVPIA will work closely with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement (VPIA), in concert with the Board of Directors of the Cortland College Foundation (CCF), to provide key leadership in bringing the current $25 million comprehensive capital campaign to completion over the next couple years and continue to broaden and enhance our fundraising efforts for the future.
Major Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive leadership and oversight for all fundraising operations to include direct supervisory responsibility over our major gifts, planned gifts and leadership gift officers; the Director of the Cortland Fund (who manages the annual fund operations); the Manager of Compliance and Stewardship, and advancement information services. The AVP will also be responsible for all operational budgets under the fundraising unit, which you will coordinate with the VPIA and the Director of Advancement Financial Operations for the CCF.
- Collaborate with the Director of The Cortland Fund in developing effective strategies and programs to meet both dollar and participation goals for alumni, students, friends, parents, faculty, emeriti faculty and staff.
- Collaborate and in consultation with the VPIA to establish individual fundraising goals and strategies that include prospect research, travel visits, donor development, moves management and stewardship.
- Work with members of the advancement information services and prospect research team to help support fundraising efforts.
- In coordination with the Director of Advancement Financial Services, the AVP will work with the Advancement Operations Associate to identify opportunities for policy and process clarification, operational efficiency, and auditable gift processing that ensures accuracy and credibility.
- Work collaboratively with the VPIA to provide divisional leadership, including strategic planning, staff development and management.
- In the absence of the VPIA you may be called upon for divisional leadership.
- As an AVP, will serve on the President’s Council. Responsibility to the Council will include attendance at meetings with preparations to report on fundraising initiatives and progress as it relates to the wider campus community.
- Will work closely with the VPIA and the executive leadership and members of the CCF Board of Directors to establish fundraising goals, generate strategies for implementation of fundraising initiatives and activities and report progress throughout the year.
- In consultation with the VPIA, the AVP will play a key role in overseeing the $25 million comprehensive capital campaign.
- Will manage a portfolio of 30-40 prospects and donors.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Several years of progressive experience in institutional advancement to include development, donor relations or fundraising experience
- Demonstrated experience in closing major gifts
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and lead a team
- Strong communication skills both verbal and written
- Effective interpersonal skills to develop collaborative working relationships
- Ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects and establish goals
- Willingness and ability to travel and work varied hours as needed
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree
- Experience working effectively with a Board of Directors
- Experience with development, donor relations, or fundraising in higher education
- Capital campaign experience
