Assistant Dean of Development, Steinhardt
Position Summary
The Assistant Dean of Development serves as a senior-level Lead School Fundraiser (LSF) for NYU Steinhardt working in close partnership with the Steinhardt Dean. Reporting to the Vice President of Development in NYU’s University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) office, the Assistant Dean is responsible for developing a portfolio of prospects with the capacity to make 6, 7 and 8+ figure gifts. The Assistant Dean is directly responsible for raising a minimum of $5M+ annually, and in supporting Steinhardt’s fundraising efforts upwards of $20M+. With a new Dean in FY21, the Assistant Dean will anticipate a strong vision and bold goals. The Assistant Dean manages a team of comprised of one Director of Development, three Major Gift Officers, one Development Associate and an Administrative Aide.
Primary leadership responsibilities include supporting the Dean’s major and principal gift strategies and activities, with a strong emphasis on the Dean’s top ten donors and prospects. The Assistant Dean works in partnership with the Dean and the Dean’s Office to manage the Steinhardt Dean’s Council; including agenda content, membership, recruitment and retention of members. The Assistant Dean is located in UDAR with other Lead School Fundraisers who provide senior-level expertise, partnership and collaboration in support of an interest-based, donor-centric assignment and fundraising approach.
The Assistant Dean is part of a larger team that all have the opportunity to raise money across the University, including Steinhardt. The Assistant Dean may also follow a donor’s interests to other areas of the University. At all times, the Assistant Dean is considered a content expert on Steinhardt’s key funding areas and functions as an ambassador and advocate for Steinhardt’s philanthropic priorities. The Assistant Dean carries budget responsibilities specific to Steinhardt development expenses, supported by UDARs centralized Operations & Finance Team.
Qualifications
Required Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree
Required Experience:
- 10 plus years progressively responsible experience in development, at least 5 of which must be in a managerial capacity or equivalent combination.
- Must include experience raising seven-figure gifts and supporting a dean or leader with a nonprofit.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience in an academic environment working with faculty and deans.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability and experience in managing a development staff and interacting with a diverse population.
- Demonstrated ability to strategize, interact effectively with alumni, faculty, donors, and officers, and to meet fundraising goals.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge in one of Steinhardt’s content areas – education, health, and the arts.
