Essential Job Duties

The Director of Development (DoD) for Arts will report to the Executive Director of Development for DASA and a secondary reporting line to the Executive Director for the Arts. The DoD will provide strategy and leadership in raising private support for NC State University’s six visual and performing arts programs- Crafts Center, Dance Program, Gregg Museum of Art & Design, Music Department, NC State LIVE, and University Theatre.

While focused on a strong campaign completion, the DoD will articulate a long-term vision for the Arts Development, increasing the pipeline of $50,000+ prospects and collaborating with the central major gifts team to maximize Arts giving. The position works in close collaboration with the DASA Development team, the Executive Director of the Arts, the Arts Directors, faculty and volunteers providing strategic thought leadership. The DoD will manage the complete range of development activities in support of the Arts. This will include annual and major giving, development communications and stewardship, administration oversight, and staff development.

Other Work/ Responsibilities

Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • Developing strategic relationships among academic leaders, alumni, friends and campus colleagues that result in effective partnerships, alignment of donors’ philanthropic interests and increased philanthropic funding.
  • Identification, qualification, cultivation and solicitation of prospects to create and grow a pipeline of major gift ($50,000 and above) donors.
  • Conducting at least 100 meetings with prospects and donors annually and participating in 18+ solicitations annually.
  • Coordination of stewardship efforts as needed with appropriate University Advancement and other campus colleagues.
  • Supporting the Friends of the Arts NC State Board of Advisors.
  • Providing administrative oversight of Arts Development, including managing its staff consisting of two FTE, budget management, program assessment, endowment oversight.
  • Participating in Arts Directors’ meetings and contribute to Arts marketing and communications efforts.

Minimum Experience/Education

Requires a relevant post-Baccalaureate degree with a minimum of three (3) years or greater of related professional experience, or a relevant undergraduate degree and a minimum of five (5) years or greater of relevant experience may be substituted for the advanced degree.

  • Demonstrated success in securing major gifts (six and seven-figure)
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and ethics of fundraising
  • Ability to build effective internal and external relationships
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills, with high attention to detail
  • Excellent listening, communication, interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly in person and in writing
  • Ability to take academic and programmatic priorities and translate them into development opportunities
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic team environment
  • Understanding and comfort with cold calling, negotiating and closing deals/gifts
  • Commitment to a collegial and collaborative team approach
  • Unquestioned integrity

  • Optimism, perseverance and a positive attitude
  • Computer literacy and competency with electronic donor information systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Personal belief in mission, goals and objectives of public higher education, particularly as they relate to the arts.
  • Experience in higher education institutional advancement
  • Masters degree
  • Prior experience in a comprehensive capital campaign
  • An understanding of the land grant, research Tier One university environment
  • Familiarity with NC State University
  • Volunteer management experience
