Summary:

The Assistant Vice President for Development is responsible for the development and implementation of programs and strategies for the solicitation of gifts from foundations, corporations, individuals, and other organizations including the preparation and presentation of proposals and grant submissions to increase private support for all priorities and initiatives of Xavier University. In addition, the Assistant Vice President for Development will be responsible for special fundraising events, including UNCF initiatives and other high-profile fundraising programs. He/she will also work with unit heads and development officers to develop annual fundraising and campaign plans, to include goal setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other relevant duties may be assigned.

  • Develop programs and strategies to establish relationships with corporations, foundations, organizations, and individuals that will result in major gifts;
  • Develop and implement an annual strategic plan, with measurable goals and objectives;
  • Establishes short and long range goals for private funding sources and enlists support from members of institution staff and volunteer organizations;
  • Identifies and researches private corporations to identify potential sources of funding for research, community service, or other projects;
  • Directs grant programs for corporations, and corporate foundation funding;
  • Directs major gifts program for funding from individuals;
  • Maintains a portfolio of high-end major gifts prospects and donors;
  • Develop proposals that articulate the university’s mission and strong case for support of University funding priorities;
  • Work with Advancement staff, University administrators, and faculty members as appropriate to create and implement successful partnerships and collaborations with corporations, foundations, individuals and other organizations that address the University’s highest priorities for operating support, scholarships, research, scholarly excellence, program development, and capital needs;
  • Oversee Moves Management for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities of all constituents;
  • Oversee post award reporting and other grant stewardship activity for foundations and other constituents that require reporting;
  • Directs the writing, editing, and proofreading of proposals and reports to funders;
  • Plans and coordinates benefit events

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises five or more employees in the Corporate and Foundation Relations, Grant Writing and Reporting, Major Gifts, and Planned Giving areas. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) and seven years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Physical Demands

  • Work is performed primarily while seated at a desk or moving to other office areas. Incumbent must possess dexterity to use a computer keyboard, telephone and photocopier. Walks, stoops, lifts up to 30 pounds and stands for short periods of time.

Employee must maintain confidentiality in all work performed. Must be flexible in work schedule and may be required to work evenings, weekends, or be available to travel.
