The Office of Advancement at St. Joseph’s College New York (SJCNY) has an opportunity for an experienced Executive Director of Development. This role serves as one of the primary advancement professionals supporting major gift development, annual fund activities and special events on behalf of SJCNY. The Executive Director of Development will work closely with academic and administrative partners across two campuses; Patchogue and Brooklyn. In addition, this position works closely with the director of alumni engagement in the areas of development, management and integration of programs that engage alumni and donors in creative and relevant ways as resources for the College and for each other and which converts such important engagement with the College into support. This position is a field-facing resource development role; advancement professionals with demonstrated experience in major gift fundraising (at least $25,000 with a focus on gifts of $100,000 or more), annual fund and special events in a private institution setting preferred.

Core Responsibilities

  • Leads a team to secure, sustain and steward philanthropic support using best practices and metrics to measure progress. (knowledge of Moves Management preferred)
  • Have understanding and comprehension of depth and breadth of position and the significance and impact of annual targets.
  • Ability to step in for the Vice President of Institutional Advancement at events, meetings and public gatherings upon request.
  • Portfolio Management: The Executive Director manages an assigned portfolio of prospective donors containing between 75 and 90 prospects. Goals relating to personal visits, proposals at the major gift level, proposal assists, stage moves and portfolio engagement are established with, and approved annually by the Vice President.
  • Works closely with SJCNY faculty, administrators and staff and is expected to partner directly with them to engage prospective individual donors.
  • Collaborates with the Assistant Vice President of Advancement Operations as needed and directly with volunteers and advisory boards’ members as needed to develop and implement fundraising strategies in order to meet goals and objectives established with the Vice President.
  • Works to ensure timely, accurate completion of proposals, contact reports, pledges and fund agreements. Documents prospect strategies, evaluates new prospects and generates stewardship reports and general correspondence daily to cultivate major gift prospects.
  • Directs the annual fund in close coordination with the alumni engagement office, integrated by collaborative communications, alumni segmentation, and messaging. (This includes faculty/staff giving and Giving Day)
  • Collaborates on special events.
  • Represents SJCNY and the Office of Advancement on both the Patchogue and Brooklyn campuses and at campus/off campus events in order to support the College and cultivate donors.
  • Lead a team of dedicated professionals with direction, creativity, work ethic and professionalism.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Information you need

  • This position requires monthly travel within and outside of the state of New York.
  • Drivers license required.
  • Collaboration, cooperation and collegiality is a must.
  • This position requires 50% of time spent on the Brooklyn Campus and 50% time on the Long Island Campus.
  • Evening and weekend hours on occasion needed.

Requirement

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of 5 years of top level, successful fundraising experience.
  • Demonstrated success in raising major gifts ($25,000 and higher).
  • Driver’s License
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

Candidates need

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to develop and maintain interpersonal relationships. Public speaking skills a must.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of prospective donors and College community members to a collegial and productive way.
  • Ability to analyze information/situations and solve problems.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information discreetly and maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be able to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must have ability to work independently and collaboratively, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Experience in leading a team in a positive and cohesive manner.
  • Knowledge of current issues facing public universities and interests, scientific reaching and research, as well as students, faculty, and alumni.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit and manage the activities of volunteers.
  • Positive outlook, flexible, high level of professionalism and demonstrated leadership skills.

What We Are Looking For

  • Six or more years of progressively responsible fundraising experience, a dedicated leader.
  • Experience in higher education fundraising, specifically fundraising for a private institution
  • Demonstrated success in cultivating and soliciting outright and deferred gifts from individuals at the major gift level ($25,000 and higher)
  • Demonstrated success in annual fund solicitations and an organic integration of the annual fund with alumni engagement.
  • Budgeting experience
  • Experience in developing stewardship plans for major, annual fund and volunteers.
  • Understanding of/experience in a liberal arts institution
  • Experience using Raiser’s Edge

Salary

Salary is commensurate with experience.
